It’s almost here. Celebrate as John Adams suggested in a letter to Abigail he penned on July 3rd 1776.
“It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
Now, I really believe in my heart that on the eve of our great Declaration, President Adams had foreseen a group dedicated to Sport and revelry would be ever-present at his “great anniversary Festival.” A group with a like-minded purpose to “imbibe more of the Ale that hath shewn to be Good, than toil on thy roads for fame or fortune.” He knew the BRC would be here. He Knew that people would go out and act like yahoos in an embarrassing display of excess and revelry. Famous historian J. Spicoli once even opined that “What Jefferson was saying was, Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus; so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves – pronto – we'll just be bogus too! Get it?”
So what better way to commemorate this vision, than by rehearsing the route for Thursday’s contest. Tomorrow, we shall engage in “Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires, and Illuminations” while we run the 10K route https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/767825445/
BRC Express can run the official 4th of July 5K Route: https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/167577564/
Those who want more miles might run both.
